We pledge our support to the goal and principles of inclusive education as a fundamental human right of every person, and the elimination of barriers and discrimination against children and young people with disability in education and in society as a whole.”

Over the past few years we have built a warm and positive reputation with students and families across Queensland, with our efforts to advocate, support and promote true inclusion. We were buoyed in 2018 by the release of the Department of Education’s Inclusive Education Policy Statement and the accompanying work of the Disability and Inclusion team in rolling this out. We have been very open about our desire to work collaboratively with the Department in effecting real change and our willingness to include open and frank feedback as an element of this collaborative work.

Our QCIE Peer Support Network is the key element of our community engagement. The closed Facebook group is a part of that. Coffee and chat sessions and Brisbane dinners are fundamental to building and maintaining ourselves as an effective advocate. We are building networks in other places, slowly but surely.
Not everyone in the network is on Facebook and not everyone in this group attend sessions.

First and foremost, all members advocate for their own children and are part of the QCIE Peer Support Network to build their network, knowledge and sustain themselves as advocates.

Fact sheets
Resources
Families for Inclusive Education One of the key concerns we hear about is where to access reliable information to help advocate for students. We are very proud to have been involved with CRU - Community Resource Unit Ltd. Whether you are a student, family member, educator, school leader, other professional, or a community member interested in inclusive education, it is helpful to keep learning about inclusive education. You will find resources on what quality inclusive education looks like in practice, including research on what works, laws and policies on inclusion, and current approaches to inclusion in class, in the playground and in all aspects of school life. You will also find stories from families and educators pursuing inclusive education and practical tips on the “how” of successful inclusion and parent advocacy. CRU has previously developed a series of fact sheets designed to build the capacity of parents to create and facilitate peer support networks and further their sons' and daughters' inclusive education. The fact sheets can be found here. Having the support and encouragement of other families who are striving to get the best inclusive education for their kids has been key to my son’s successful inclusion. I now know my child’s rights, his protection under the law and that inclusion in regular school is best for him.” |
2020 version of 'I Choose Inclusion'
Link In 2019, CRU received funding from Queensland’s Department of Education for the Families for Inclusive Education Project which is designed to assist families to develop their advocacy skills so they can be a valued partner in their child’s education. This revised edition of I Choose Inclusion is funded from the Families for Inclusive Education Project, proudly supported by the Queensland Government through the Department of Education. |
